Subject: ARES of Champaign County QST - January 2004

The January 2004 meeting was canceled. However, there have been some important
opportunities come up that I'd like to make you aware of.

TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
The Illini Prairie Chapter of the American Red Cross is offering a number of
training courses to its volunteers over the next couple of months, and ARES
members have been invited to participate in these as well. If you missed
Introduction to Disaster (the basic ARC volunteer training) and Damage Assessment,
both those classes are being offered soon. I strongly recommend that all ARES
members attend the Introduction to Disaster class if you have not done so already.
ARC is one of our served agencies, and this class will give you the background you
need when we are working with them. If you are interested in taking any of the
following classes, please let me know as soon as possible.

Introduction to Disaster Sat, Feb 7 9:00 am
                                                    Tues, Feb 12, 7:00 pm

Disaster Assessment March 6, 9:00 am - 12noon

Shelter Operations April 10, 9:00 am-4:00 pm

All classes will be held at the Illini Prairie Chapter Headquarters on Main St.
in Urbana,

2M FM CHALLENGE IS BACK
After a two-year hiatus, the K9CU 2M FM Challenge is back. This is a local
contest on 2m FM simplex. No cross-band or repeater QSO's are allowed, and it
is a blast. You don't need a big radio to participate - a H-T will do the job.
The next FM Challenge will be Tuesday, February 24, 2004 from 0200-0300 GMT.
This translates to Monday evening, February 23, from 8p-9p Illinois time.Ê

The complete rules and entry categories may be found at:

DECEMBER 13th SET A SUCCESS
The annual Simulated Emergency Test (SET) held in conjunction with the Red
Cross and ESDa was big success. 12 ARES members responded to the "emergency",
a simulated train derailment in Tolono. A summary and evaluation of the SET
will be posted to the WA9RES web site in the near future.

NEXT MEETING
The next monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at the Fire
Service Institute. Debbie Fligor will be conducting training on basic emergency
communications.
