The February meeting of ARES of Champaign County was held Wednesday, February 4,
2004 at the Fire Service Institute. Here are important notes from that meeting
and other news.
ATTENDING
N9XDC, N9GPA, N9DN, W9MOO, KC9DEQ, KC9AZX, AB9FJ, KB9KAI, KC9DSS
BASIC EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS
ARES AEC Deb Fligor, N9DN, presented an overview of basic emergency communications
based on the curriculum of the EmComm I course offered by ARRL. This presentation
will be part of our regular cycle of ARES training.Ê
RED CROSS TRAINING
The Illini Prairie Chapter of the Red Cross is offering training to heir members
and ARES members are invited to participate. Remaining courses available are:
Disaster Assessment March 6, 9:00 am - 12noon
Shelter Operations April 10, 9:00 am-4:00 pm
All classes will be held at the Illini Prairie Chapter Headquarters on Main St.
in Urbana. Let me know if you are interested in attending either of these classes.
MARCH MEETING
Since spotter training is on March 9, there will be no regular March meeting on
March 3. Instead, there will be a board meeting on that evening.
STORM SPOTTER TRAINING
Annual NWS storm spotter training will be on Tuesday, March 9, at 6:30 pm at the
Carle Forum in Urbana. If you plan on storm spotting this year plan to attend
this session. If you can't make it to the Champaign County session, you can
attend in another county. The full schedule of spotter training can be found

FEBRUARY-MARCH NET CONTROL STATIONS
ARES net Tuesdays at 7:00 P.M. Let me know if you would like to take one of

2M FM CHALLENGE
After a two-year hiatus, the K9CU 2M FM Challenge is back. This is a local contest
on 2m FM simplex. No cross-band or repeater QSO's are allowed, and it is a blast.
You don't need a big radio to participate - a H-T will do the job. The next FM
Challenge will be Tuesday, February 24, 2004 from 0200-0300 GMT. This translates
to Monday evening, February 23, from 8p-9p Illinois time.Ê

SYNTON ARC
Synton is the amateur radio club of the University of Illinois and is open to any
student, faculty, and staff member. If you are a member of the club you have

NEXT MEETING
The next monthly meeting will be held Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Fire
